    Third Annual Policy Makers' Summit: November 16, 2005

Summary

There were two objectives for this year’s Summit:

  1. Report Center research findings and resources related to evidence-based practices
  2. Generate recommendations and issues for implementation, policy and scaling up.

Fifty-six people attended the Summit representing state and federal agencies, national organizations, and researchers. For a complete list of these individuals, please see the Participants List.

Greetings were brought by Alexa Posny, Director, Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP); and Larke Nahme Huang, Senior Advisor on Children, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). A keynote address by Karen Blase of the National Implementation Research Network (NIRN) provided a conceptual framework for effective implementation and scale up of evidence-based practices. Panels of short research presentations were followed by small group work to generate issues and recommendations for implementation and scale up.

  • Scaling Up: From Research to National Implementation ( Dr. Karen Blase)
  • The Kids in Development Study (KIDS) (Dr. Glen Dunlap)
  • Supporting Families and Their Very Young Children:
    • PBS and Toddlers and Their Families (Dr. Lise Fox);
    • Parent Infant Interaction (Dr. Judy Carta)
  • Improving Social and Behavioral Outcomes for Children with Autism (Dr. Phil Strain)
  • Training and Supporting Personnel (Dr. Mary Louise Hemmeter)
  • Program and State Policy Challenges and Strategies:
    • Program-Wide Adoption of the Pyramid Approach (Dr. Mary Louise Hemmeter);
    • State and Local Policy Issues and Strategies (Dr. Barbara J. Smith)
